Town of Orland Forms Committee to Examine New Use for School Property

After voting to close the Orland Consolidated School at the end of the 2010-11 school year, the Town of Orland received the deed to the school property from the RSU25 school system. As of July 1, 2011 it now becomes the responsibility of the town selectmen to find a new use for the school building and the 18 surrounding acres of land. To facilitate this process, the Board of Selectmen have asked 12 people from various business and educational backgrounds to form a committee and begin the process of studying the many different possible reuse scenarios that will be presented in the next few months.

The committee, named the "Orland Properties Development Committee" by its members, has met twice in the past few weeks and has already discussed several reuse scenarios that would benefit the citizens of the Town of Orland. The committee has also made a preliminary inventory of the building and its facilities. One of first goals of the OPDC is to solicit public input via an survey, (posted online and available in paper form at the Town Office), encouraging input and comments from the citizens of Orland. A webpage comment form and a link to the online survey form has been set up on the town’s website at http://www.orlandme.org. Also a suggestion box at the Town Office has been setup to receive written comments to be passed on to the committee. In the future, the committee has planned an open public forum to provide feedback and receive further input and comment from the town’s people. The town’s website lists the committee members and will provide feedback to the citizens on the progress of the school reuse project.

The committee was set-up as an advisory body only and reports to the Town Selectmen on a regular basis on its progress. The members of the OPDC are: Matt Brown (Chair), Dan Brooks, Betty Chavaree, David Doherty, Bart Hutchins, Dexter Johnson, Brenda Leavitt, Mike Malenfant, Jessica Rollerson, Robert Violette, Les Stackpole and Jerry Storey. An email address for the committee has been set up - opdc@orlandme.org. Orland residents are encouraged to participate in this process of converting our school property into a resource that will benefit all the citizens of our town.

Respectfully Submitted by,
Matt Brown OPDC Chair
